So now what? Where will I go with this knowledge and discovery? I feel that this has been one of the greatest tools I have learned with transforming myself into a great teacher. She was not the loudest singer but she did sing our Native American song the last day. I told her that I just have fun and challenged her to do thie same. She was surprised and we laughed at how we always think others will laugh at us. Well, I could empathize with this student and hopefully helped her to gain some confidence in expressing herself and just embrace having fun. She said she had a horrible voice and was afraid the kids would laugh at her. There was a student who was not singing and I was able to talk with her one day about why she didn't sing. I learned in my field experience that the kids did not care about my singing voice. It is not about how well you sing but how fun you make it. I feel that I have conquered this fear somewhat in this class. I have always been fearful of singing in public. I have also learned that I must have confidence in myself to let my students see me have fun and get excited about what I am teaching. But with the help of the arts I feel it is easier to accomplish. Let's face it one of our biggest challenges as teachers is to be able to excite our students and keep them intersted in learning. Students need to be challenged and entertained. They have proven how the brain is plastic and how you can change the ability of the mind to learn more through movement ( including several forms of the arts). I have also been fascinated with what they have learned through research of the human brain. I have also helped my brother see how the arts actually help with the core. He has started looking at the arts differently as well. It is amazing to me how you can incorporate these tools onto your lessons that have real meaning and relevance. I feel that I am a very creative person and like to express myself through art and especially dance. I was delighted at how much our 4th graders liked to sing and move and express themselves in different forms of assessments. We used it a great deal in our lessons for social studies. I loved the process drama that we learned about in class. I found that the students not only had fun but really learned, not just facts but ideas and concepts. I was reconsidered my thinking about the time that would take away from teaching the core to realizing that through the arts I was teaching the core. She helped me to see how much fun the arts can be. I had the great opportunity of working with Sara Gustafson as my field partner. Little by little I learned through hands on experience in class that I could teach my students art that is relevant and important in teaching our students. With all that we are expected to teach and yes test our students I was a little pessimistic of how this was possible. When I started the course I was thinking it was great to have the arts but almost impossible to fit it all in.

I have heard it all about how you must teach the core! What I have discovered is that the best way to teach the core is through integration of the arts. I come from a family of teachers and principals. I came into the course a little skeptic of how the arts could and should really tie into the core objectives. I feel that I have come very far in this area. So this is my final reflection of my journey through the creative arts integration topic. Where am I heading with the Arts and Arts Integration?
